Workspaces

Create a workspace for a project, a team, or the private part of your life you do not want mixed into either. It reopens with the same files, apps, window arrangement, members, permissions and history.

A workspace is the durable boundary of the desktop. A strip is not.

What the boundary does

Open a terminal in a work workspace and it sees that workspace’s files and grants. Open the same terminal in your private workspace and it starts in a different place. Inviting a colleague to the first workspace does not expose the second, your notifications or the rest of the machine.

Every window belongs to one strip, and every strip belongs to one workspace. Move windows between strips freely. Moving work into another workspace is different: the destination may have different members and permissions, so the desktop names who gains access before the move completes.

Return to your work

A workspace keeps:

its strips, window groups and open items;
files and structured app data;
members and current participants;
permissions for people, agents and apps;
searchable, attributed history; and
the host that keeps a complete copy available.

Personal settings remain personal. Your language, theme, input preferences and personal default apps do not become team policy because you entered a shared workspace.

Choose where it lives

A workspace can be hosted on this computer, on an always-on machine you own, or on an organisation’s server. The interface stays the same in each case. The host keeps a complete copy and makes the workspace reachable; other devices fetch what they need and keep working from local state when disconnected.

Hosting and access remain separate. Moving the host does not silently change the members or their permissions.

Not everyone who needs a file needs a place in the workspace. Choose Share on a file to create a read-only or editable link with an expiry. The recipient gets that file, not workspace membership.

A link needs a reachable host. If the workspace lives only on a laptop and that laptop is asleep, the link is unavailable. The share panel says so before it creates the link.

Leave, remove or delete

These actions remain distinct:

Leave workspace ends your membership.
Remove from this device removes the local copy without deleting the workspace elsewhere.
Delete workspace removes the shared workspace for its members.
